
Black Pace whose original name is Mwayi Mphande was born in Blantyre, Malawi. Originally, Pace is from NkhataBay, on the shore of Lake Malawi (formerly Lake Nyasa), east of Mzuzu, and is one of the main ports on Lake Malawi. Pace grew up in a religious setting and her passion for music started when she was 10. At the age of 13, she started to compose music.
The Malawian female hip-hop artist has been redefining the role of a girl and now a woman in Malawi since she was 15. Being a female hip-hop artist anywhere has its challenges but in Malawi where women are still struggling for rights, it is particularly challenging.
In 2017 she emerged as the first Malawian woman to record a hip-hop album entitled Nkazi Moto, The album is inspired by female Chief Kachindamoto, internationally known for her fight against childhood marriage. Pace continues and expands this work today. As an activist, Black Pace is committed to expanding opportunities in music for her Malawian sisters, particularly in her Northern home Mzuzu. She continues to be committed to fighting against childhood marriage.
Pace was invited to Nairobi, Kenya to participate in an internationally recognized leadership program Beyond Hoops Africa led by Kenyan James Kamau. Black Pace both performed and lead a group of young basketball girls through a short leadership hip hop program that incorporated elements of U-Theory; a social technology developed by an award winning prof from MIT in the United States. She has a goal of broadening the reach of this outstanding life skill leadership program to Malawi that would engage both young men and women.
She Has been performing at Lake of Stars (LOS) festival an annual three-day international festival held on the shores of Lake Malawi for years and many other events
The artist has worked with CULTURES OF RESISTANCE (an organization that promotes global solidarity and connects and supports agitators, educators, farmers, and artists to build a more just and peaceful world through creative resistance),YONECO(Youth-net Counselling, an organization established to respond the needs and challenges affecting youth and children in Malawi.), UNFPA (a United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency)and LAKE OF STARS.
